Which processor did Google choose to beat AWS?

Google Announces AMD Product Adoption for New Virtual Machines

🟩Compared to AWS: Performance +56%, Cost Performance +40%

Googl used AMD’s third-generation EPYC processor for its “Tau” virtual machine. The aim is to improve the performance and cost performance of cloud services.

🟩 Is the performance actually good?

The virtual machine “Tau” will be available to the general public from the second half of this year, but it is said that it has confirmed the performance improvement with some customers such as Snapchat and Twitter.

Snap: “At Snap
, we’ve tested GoogleCloud’s new TauVM with GoogleKubernetesEngine, and while we’re just getting started, we believe we can get double-digit numbers with infrastructure performance improvements for key workloads.”

Twitter
: “We are excited about the initial testing that shows the potential for double-digit performance gains, and we are working with Google Cloud to better evaluate the pricing and performance benefits of specific compute workloads that can be achieved by using the new TauVM family.”

🟩Will AMD overwhelm Intel and ARM

Currently, Intel dominates the market for server processors. Will Google’s adoption in virtual machines make AMD’s EPYC more powerful?

It won’t happen anytime soon.

Google will also make Tau virtual machines available for Intel and ARM in the same way so that processor vendors don’t fix them.

🟩Summary

The processor chosen by Google as the new virtual machine was AMD. It would be nice if users would benefit from healthy competition from CPU manufacturers.
