🟦 U.S. Government Urges Allies to Tighten Semiconductor Export Controls

The U.S. government has called on allies, including Japan and the Netherlands, to tighten restrictions on China’s access to semiconductor technology. In July 23, the Foreign Exchange Act was amended to include 23 items, including advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment, under export control restrictions. However, the regulations that were limited to advanced products with a 14nm process or less will be expanded to include mid-to-high-end machines, and chemical materials will also be included. Japan government says it has no plans for new restrictions at this time, but it may affect the overseas strategies of Japan’s related manufacturers.

🟦 Countering China’s Threat of Evading Regulations

The U.S. government wants to slow down China’s semiconductor innovation and gain an advantage in the struggle for supremacy in areas such as the economy, military, and technology. On the other hand, in order to circumvent regulations, China is improving manufacturing equipment for general-purpose products that fall short of regulatory standards and utilizing parts and technologies purchased before the introduction of regulations. The U.S. government made the request because it was concerned that if its allies did not cooperate, the effects of the restrictions would be diminished.

🟦Summary

The Japan government says it has no plans for new restrictions at this time, but it could have a significant impact on Japan’s semiconductor-related industry.

Japan government says it has no plans for new restrictions at this time, but it is likely to follow the U.S. in the end.
