Renesas consolidates the Shiga plant and transfers the land
🟩 Sold land for Shiga factory
Renesas Electronics announced in June 2018 that it would close and consolidate its Shiga plant within the next two to three years. As a result, we stopped production of silicon wafers at the end of March 2021. This time, we will stop the remaining compound semiconductor production at the end of August 2021 and sell the land.
Renesas’ Shiga Plant was originally the Shiga Plant of the NEC Group’s Kansai NEC. We were looking for a transfer destination for utilization after the closure of the factory, but it was decided to sell the land.
🟩 Semiconductor slump for optical communications
The Shiga Plant used to produce discrete products such as power transistors and diodes. As part of the 2013 production structure reform, the 8-inch wafer line at the Shiga plant was sold to ROHM. In anticipation of the expansion of the optical communication market, the company continued to produce semiconductors for optical communications such as semiconductor lasers and photodiodes, as well as gallium arsenide lines, at the Shiga Plant.
However, due to intensifying technological and price competition with overseas manufacturers, the market share of existing products declined, and the development of new products for next-generation telecommunications was delayed. It became difficult to secure the sales that were initially expected, and it was judged that it would be extremely difficult to secure continuous earnings at the Shiga Plant.
