NXP and automotive supplier ZF have partnered to develop a next-generation SiC-based traction inverter solution for electric vehicles (EVs). The partnership will improve the safety, efficiency, range, and performance of EVs, helping to reduce CO2 emissions and promote sustainability.

🟦Maximizing the performance of SiC power devices

In the electric powertrain of electric vehicles (EVs), traction inverters play an important role in converting the direct current (DC) voltage from the battery into the alternating current (AC) voltage that drives the motor. In recent years, SiC-based designs using silicon carbide (SiC) power devices have become mainstream, making a significant contribution to improving the performance of EVs.

SiC power devices offer advantages over traditional silicon devices, such as high switching frequency, low conduction losses, excellent thermal performance, and high robustness at high voltages. However, in order to maximize its performance, a high-voltage insulated gate driver is essential.

In recent years, the voltage of EV batteries has been increasing from about 400V to 800V. This is spreading rapidly, especially in luxury cars. ZF’s next-generation 800 V SiC-based traction inverter solution for EVs uses NXP’s high-voltage isolated gate drivers.
