🟦 Honda’s SoC’s unique customization appeals to EVs

Honda held its “2024 Business Update”. In preparation for the era of full-scale adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in 2030, Honda announced that it will strategically introduce EVs centered on the Honda 0 Series in EVs, and will evolve the performance of hybrid vehicles (HVs) and develop a comprehensive global lineup.

We have developed our own E&E architecture, the vehicle OS that is the upper layer of the E&E architecture, and the applications that ride on top of it. Honda’s unique SoC (System on Chip) semiconductors will also be customized, such as suppressing power consumption while incorporating AI, which is indispensable for the evolution of automation and intelligence. Honda aims to provide EVs that are more attractive, safe, secure, and comfortable.

🟦 Honda SoC’s original customization enhancements

Honda’s unique customization of SoC (System on Chip) semiconductors will enhance the following three points.

  • Equipped with AI functions: Equipped with AI functions that are indispensable for the evolution of automation and intelligence, it will improve EV performance, fuel efficiency, connected technology, and AD/ADAS evolution.
  • Power Consumption Reduction: At the same time as being equipped with AI functions, power consumption is also reduced, contributing to the improvement of EV cruising range and the reduction of environmental impact.
  • Transition to a central architecture: In the latter half of the 2020s, we will move to a central architecture that consolidates multiple ECUs that control individual vehicle body systems into a core ECU, which will improve system processing speed, enhance functional coordination, and improve development efficiency.

🟦Summary

Honda will develop a unique SoC that will change the future of EVs by equipping its SoCs with AI functions that will improve EV performance, fuel efficiency, connected technology, and AD/ADAS evolution.

There are many ways to customize your SoC, such as developing your own semiconductors or making special versions of Qualcomm and Renesas chips. Joint development with IBM is a somewhat different approach from SoC-specific customization because it specializes in the development of architectures and manufacturing methods.
