🟦In 2024, global semiconductor production capacity will increase significantly

According to SEMI, global semiconductor production capacity in 2024 is expected to increase by 6.4% year-on-year and exceed 30 million pieces per month. This increase is due to the growing demand for semiconductors and the support of governments around the world. From 2022 to 2024, a total of 82 new semiconductor mass production plants are expected to be operational.

New semiconductor mass production plants around the world:

  • 2022: 29 factories
  • 2023: 11 factories
  • 2024: 42 factories

🟦Global semiconductor production soars due to increased demand for AI and HPC

Increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) is driving the expansion of advanced logic and foundry production capacity. There is also a growing global focus on the strategic importance of semiconductors. This is expected to increase the production capacity of foundries, DRAM, 3D NAND, discrete semiconductors, and analog semiconductors, respectively.

Trends by region are as follows.

  • China: 12% increase in 2023 and 13% increase to 8.6 million units per month in 2024
  • Taiwan: TSMC to increase to 5.7 million units per month in 2024
  • South Korea: Samsung and SK hynix to increase to 5.1 million units per month in 2024
  • Japan: Increase to 4.7 million per month by 2024
  • U.S., EMEA and Southeast Asia: Increased production capacity

🟦Summary

In 2024, global semiconductor production capacity is expected to increase by 6.4% year-on-year, surpassing 30 million pieces per month for the first time in history. This increase is driven by the growing demand for AI and HPC, as well as support from governments around the world

Rapid expansion is always followed by a backlash, so it is preferable to grow gradually. But whatever the situation, the expansion of the semiconductor industry is a certainty.
