Accelerating the electrification of automobiles and industrial equipment!
🟦Expansion of SiC wafer supply contract to ROHM subsidiary SiCrystal ST Micro
SiCrystal, a ROHM subsidiary, has expanded its long-term supply contract for 150mm SiC wafers to STMicroelectronics. The expanded agreement provides for a multi-year supply of SiC wafers produced in Nuremberg, Germany, and is expected to be valued at more than $230 million. With this agreement, ST will strengthen its production capacity for SiC power semiconductors for automotive and industrial equipment.
🟦Long-term contract for external procurement of SiC substrates
SiC power semiconductors have excellent energy efficiency and are essential components for the electrification of automobiles and industrial equipment. It also provides a more reliable power supply for infrastructure facilities such as data centers. In recent years, semiconductor manufacturers have tended to enter into long-term contracts for external procurement of SiC substrates. This is because the manufacturing cost of SiC wafers is high and a large amount of investment is required to establish a mass production system. Examples of semiconductor manufacturers with long-term contracts for external procurement of SiC substrates are as follows.Infineon: Resonac, Wolfspeed, Coherent (formerly II-VI)ONCEMI: GTATST Microelectronics: Wolfspeed, Psycrystal (ROHM)ROHM: ResonacToshiba: Resonac
🟦Summary
Sicrystal, a ROHM subsidiary, announced that it will supply SiC wafers produced at its Nuremberg, Germany, factory to STMicroelectronics over a multi-year period. This contract expansion is in line with the recent trend of semiconductor manufacturers concluding long-term contracts for external procurement of SiC substrates.
ROHM procures some of its own SiC power semiconductor wafers from Resonac, while its subsidiary, Sicrystal, supplies wafers to STMicroelectronics. It appears that the company is diversifying its SiC power semiconductor wafer procurement strategy.
