🟦 Huawei’s new smartphone adopts China-made in-house chipset to establish 5G technology
Chinese telecommunications equipment giant Huawei has launched a new smartphone, the Mate60 Pro. The smartphone is attracting attention for being equipped with the high-speed communication standard “5G”, which is the first since the procurement of high-performance semiconductors was banned. It also features in-house developed semiconductors, new design, reliability, and improved durability. Huawei is ramping up its own chip production and rebuilding its semiconductor supply network in China.

U.S. export restrictions prevented Huawei from using U.S. technology, and banned exports of particularly advanced 5G technology. However, the new Mate60 Pro is equipped with a 5G chipset developed in-house. This has become an important part of China’s semiconductor industry in resisting the U.S. embargo.
As for the chips, it was revealed that they are equipped with Kirin chips that use 7nm process semiconductors from SMIC, China’s largest semiconductor foundry. The 7nm process was prohibited from being exported to China and required extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment. However, it shows that China’s semiconductor industry has made technological progress and produced advanced 7nm process products without EUV lithography equipment. In other words, it demonstrates its ability to resist U.S. semiconductor export restrictions to China.
