🟦 Micron begins mass production of the world’s first 232-layer NAND

Micron Technology, a leading semiconductor memory company, announced that it has started mass production of its 232-layer NAND flash memory. Compared to the previous generation of 176-layer NAND, it can achieve up to 100% write per die and 75% read performance. The 232-layer NAND Flash will be mass-produced at Micron’s Singapore plant.

🟦NAND Flash Stacking Competition

In the NAND industry, stacking dies has improved performance and storage capacity. In 2007, Toshiba Memory announced the world’s first flash memory using a 3D stacked structure. There is a development race for each generation, and Micron’s 232 layers are the 8th generation.

  • 8th generation 200 layers or more
  • 7th generation 162, 176,192 layers
  • 6th generation 112, 128 layers
  • 5th generation 92,96 layers
  • 4th generation 64,72 layers
  • 3rd generation 32 layers
  • 2rd generation 24 layers

Status of NAND Companies

Samsung Electronics released the seventh-generation 176-layer V-NAND V-NAND in
2021. Completed prototype of 8-generation VNAND with over 200 layers

Micron
Mass production and shipment of the world’s first 7th generation 176-layer 3D NAND flash memory began in 2020. Mass production of 8th generation 232-layer NAND to begin in 2022

KIOXIA & Western Digital Since
2020, the company has been mass-producing the BiCS FLASHTM, which applies a 112-layer lamination process equivalent to the sixth generation. From 2022, we plan to mass-produce 162-layer 7th generation equivalent 3DNAND flash memory.

SK Hynix announced the completion of development of the seventh generation 176-layer 4D NAND flash in
2021. The development of the seventh generation was second after the company.

From 2021, Chinese memory semiconductor company YMTC has started mass production of the sixth-generation 128-layer 3D NAND flash memory products. At the end of 2018, it flew two generations, 64-layer and 96-layer, and entered the sixth-generation 128-layer development, and started mass production at the end of 2020. It is rumored that 192 layers of 3D NAND will be mass-produced from 2022.

🟦Summary

Micron is the first in the world to start mass production of the 8th generation 232-layer NAND, and each company is in the process of launching the 7th generation, so Micron is one step ahead in lamination.

I would like KIOXIA to take advantage of the subsidy so that it does not fall behind the competition.
