Microchip Technology is making its MPLAB XC Pro compilers and MPLAB Machine Learning Development Suite available at no cost. The move removes an early licensing barrier for teams evaluating Microchip microcontrollers and embedded machine learning.
Pro optimization without an upfront fee
The offer covers MPLAB XC8, XC16, XC32 and XC-DSC for Microchip’s 8-, 16- and 32-bit MCUs and dsPIC devices. Developers can use the optimization capabilities associated with the Pro editions to evaluate code size, memory use and execution speed before committing to a production platform.
A lower-cost path to embedded ML
MPLAB ML Model Builder is available as a plugin for MPLAB and Visual Studio Code. It helps bring sensor classification and anomaly-detection models to the edge, where data can be processed on the device instead of being sent to the cloud. Free access should make early experiments more practical for small teams, education and proof-of-concept projects.
Why it matters
Development-tool cost influences which MCU a team evaluates in the first place. Removing the initial compiler fee lets engineers compare real code size and performance on hardware before making that choice. For Microchip, wider tool adoption can create a longer-term path from evaluation to device selection and production.
Check the terms before production
Free access does not necessarily mean that every device, version, support channel or commercial condition is identical. Teams should confirm the applicable MCU families, license terms, update policy and support options with Microchip before using the tools in a production program.
Takeaway
Microchip’s MPLAB move expands the development entry point for both optimized firmware and embedded ML. The practical benefit is a cheaper first experiment; the production decision still requires a review of device fit, licensing and support.
