Prime Minister Kishida visited the construction site of Lapidus’ plant in Chitose City, Hokkaido, which aims to mass-produce cutting-edge 2-nanometer semiconductors in 2027.
🟦 Government Support for Mass Production of Next-Generation Semiconductors
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida inspected the construction of a state-of-the-art semiconductor factory by Lapidus and confirmed the progress of the project. Following support for the construction of a semiconductor factory in Kumamoto, the government is providing budgetary and tax support to Rapidus. Through support for the company, which aims to start mass production in 2027, we aim to mass-produce next-generation semiconductors in Japan.
🟦 Increased Private Investment and Government Guarantees
Japan government is considering a proposal to provide a government guarantee for loans to Lapidus to encourage private investment. This project, which requires 5 trillion yen in funds, requires a loan from a financial institution, but it is difficult to obtain a loan without a government guarantee. The new bill aims to make it easier for people to raise funds from the private sector and ensure continued investment by obtaining government guarantees.
🟦Summary
Rapidus, which Prime Minister Kishida visited, aims to mass-produce cutting-edge 2-nanometer semiconductors by 2027. The government plans to strengthen support for this project, promote private investment, and submit a new bill to the Diet at an early date for mass production of next-generation semiconductors.
It would be very good if we could realize priority investment support such as mass production investment and R&D support on a large scale and systematically over multiple years, rather than a single-year budget government expenditure.
