🟦 Construction of a 1 trillion yen semiconductor factory in Singapore begins! VSMC Strengthens 300mm Wafer Fabrication
Vision Power Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (VSMC), a joint venture established by Taiwan’s Vanguard International Semiconductor (VIS) and Netherlands’ NXP Semiconductors, has begun construction of a new 300mm wafer fabrication plant in Tampines, Singapore. This project is proceeding with a huge investment of 7.8 billion dollars (about 1 trillion yen), aiming to start production in 2027 and 55,000 pieces per month in 2029.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by a number of government officials and industry leaders. The facility also uses green manufacturing using the latest technology and is environmentally friendly.
🟦 Why was Singapore chosen?
Singapore was chosen as the location for the project not only because of its strategic location. As a hub for advanced manufacturing activities, Singapore is an extremely attractive location for global companies. VIS Leuh Fang also emphasized that Singapore provides an ideal environment for technological innovation and economic growth.
Moreover, the Singapore government is actively investing in human resource development, R&D, and decarbonization solutions, making it an important hub for the global semiconductor supply chain. The construction of this plant is also expected to contribute to the local economy by creating approximately 1,500 jobs and promoting partnerships with local companies.
🟦 Summary
VSMC’s construction of a 300mm wafer fabrication plant in Singapore is a new challenge and a future-proof project for the semiconductor industry. Incorporating state-of-the-art technology and environmental considerations, the facility is once again a testament to Singapore’s epicentre of technological innovation.
The trend of adopting a name that is close to the name of TSMC, the largest foundry company, like VSMC, is very interesting.
