Infineon Technologies AG has expanded its new 200mm silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductor plant in Malaysia.
🟦 The world’s largest SiC power semiconductor factory is born
Infineon Technologies AG has opened the first phase of the world’s largest and most competitive 200 mm silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductor façade in Kedah, Malaysia. The plant will invest 2 billion euros (about 320 billion yen) and will mainly produce high-efficiency SiC power semiconductors for electric vehicles, fast charging stations, railways, renewable energy systems, and AI data centers.
200mm/300mm Wafer
The diameter of the silicon wafer used in the manufacture of semiconductors. The higher the number, the more chips can be made on a single wafer, reducing manufacturing costs. In SiC power semiconductors, 200 mm is currently the most advanced technology, and high efficiency is expected.
🟦 Technological Superiority and Economic Benefits
Infineon’s new plant is dedicated to the production of SiC semiconductors that switch power more efficiently, enabling smaller, higher-power designs. In addition, a total of EUR 5 billion will be invested in the second phase, which is expected to ultimately create up to 4,000 jobs. In addition, the aim is to capture the demand for energy-saving SiC semiconductors for AI servers that consume large amounts of electricity.
Infineon’s Klim plant operates as a “single virtual fab” that shares technology and processes with the Villach plant, ensuring fast start-up and highly efficient production. This is similar to the relationship with the Dresden plant, which manufactures 300mm silicon power semiconductors.
- Villach Plant: The center for the development and production of SiC and GaN power semiconductors. He is in charge of cutting-edge technology development and prototype production.
- Kulim Plant: A mass production site for 200mm SiC power semiconductors. High-efficiency and low-cost production.
- Dresden Plant: We have a wealth of experience in the production of 300mm silicon-based semiconductors and are ready for large-scale mass production.
🟦Summary
Infineon Technologies’ new plant in Malaysia will become the world’s largest plant for the production of SiC power semiconductors and will provide an important technology foundation for future decarbonization.
Malaysia has a long track record as a back-end semiconductor manufacturing base. For this reason, the expansion of Infineon’s front-end plant is positioned as a very important project for the country.
